The Higher Education 2020 Newsletter aims to keep the sector and stakeholders informed about the Australian Government's higher education policies and programs. The current issue includes news on the Review of Australian Higher Education, updates on changes to legislation and guidelines, and information on funding rounds and other key developments.

The Portable Document Format (PDF), undeniably one of the most commonly used formats for electronic documents, is now accessible as an ISO International Standard - ISO 32000-1. This move follows a decision by Adobe Systems Incorporated, original developer and copyright owner of the format, to relinquish control to ISO, who is now in charge of publishing the specifications for the current version (1.7) and for updating and developing future versions. In May in San Francisco, experts from leading universities, libraries, and research institutions around the world met as part of an ongoing effort to address a pressing issue: archiving the world's history, right up to today. The 180-plus participants, including librarians, academics, and technical storage experts, were part of the Preservation and Archiving Special Interest Group, or PASIG. The recent decision to open up the domain naming system will create the largest boom on the internet since its creation, according to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The group approved a measure on Thursday which will remove the restrictions on domain suffixes, allowing companies to register any word as a URL suffix. Where users were previously limited to 21 suffixes, such as .com and .net, sites will now be able to use such domains as .news or .bank. IWR, 30 June 2008

The Apple University Consortium is offering up to 8 competitive scholarships to the Annual SAGE-AU 2008 conference to be held August 11 - 15 at the Holiday Inn in Adelaide, South Australia. The annual conference allows individuals to explore emerging technologies and issues confronting managers of computer systems and deployments in any organisational setting. Applications by 21 July 2008.

The federal government is to conduct a full review of the security of public and private sector information and communications networks. Attorney-General Robert McClelland and Communications Minister Stephen Conroy said the move was prompted by Australia's ever-increasing reliance on information and communications technology and the threat of a hostile online environment. The editors welcome articles from academic researchers and practitioners in areas such as communications, sociology, psychology, anthropology, information systems, political science, game studies and cultural studies. Deadline for Submission: 30 September 2008.

A group of 12 publishers have begun using CrossCheck, software that ferrets out plagiarized articles submitted for publication in scholarly journals. The software was created by CrossRef, a publishing industry association, and iParadigms, a company that sells Turnitin, software that checks student papers for plagiarized material. CrossCheck is targeted at scholars. It flags passages that a submitted journal article may have in common with published journal articles. The Chronicle of Higher Education, 27 June 2008
