Teachers typically pass through four distinct stages as they move through their teaching career. They start out fresh and, face it, somewhat scared of what lies ahead. Too many kind relatives saying that they are brave to be teaching makes them wonder if it really as terrible as some people believe. However, those teachers who make it through the first stage and realize that it really is not as bad as many people think, find themselves slowly creating their own repertoire of teaching materials and systems. Once these are in place, they can then happily move into refining their lessons and growing in their profession. Those who have taught for quite awhile will find that they have things so well in place that they can almost put their teaching on autopilot.
